No. 9 Gilbert runs past No. 8 Williams Field, advances to Open quarterfinal
February 15, 2024 by Ben Stapley, AZPreps365

On tournament 'paper', Williams Field was the higher seed playing at home Thursday night. On the court, Gilbert was was the dominant team, overwhelming Williams Field inside and out, as the Tigers ran away with a 63-34 victory in a second round Open Division playoff contest. Gilbert moves on to the quarterfinals next Thursday night, when they do battle with No. 1 seed Hamilton. STORY

Host Gilbert holds off Window Rock
December 30, 2023 by Ben Stapley, AZPreps365
Gilbert sophomore Aspen McClees knew what was coming Saturday evening.

Despite playing on their home court in one of Arizona's largest high school gymnasiums, McClees and the Tigers had to overcome not only a talented team from Window Rock, but its enormous contingency of fans that made the 280 mile drive.

Thanks in part to McClees' 18 points, the Tigers took control in the second half before securing a 40-37 victory to win the Epic New Years Tournament in front of a packed house that was mostly vocal for the visiting team.

"We kinda knew coming in they were going to have a crowd like this, and coach Walker told us," McClees said afterward.

"I'm just proud of our team and how we handled things."

Meisha Cesario added 14 points for Gilbert, including back-to-back three pointers in the third quarter that helped the Tigers take control of the game with a 10 point lead (38-28).

McClees added seven in the third quarter for Gilbert, which led 25-19 at the break.

Melicia Nelson led Window Rock with 16 points, while Jada Brown and Devae Willie combined for 17.

"That's one of the biggest crowds I've ever seen," Gilbert coach Colton Walker said after the game.

"I love how we fought through it."
